1606 as the Year of Significance for the Jesuit Order in the Light of General History and Tomasz Szpot Dunin’s (1644–1713) Historiae Sinarum Imperii

Abstract

The article analyzes the description of the year 1606 as written by Tomasz Szpot Dunin S.J. (1644-1713) in his Historiae Sinarum Imperii (ARSI, Jap. Sin. 102, Jap. Sin. 103) in a broader historical context, including both local and global perspectives. Szpot structures his narration in chronological order based on annual periodization, which combines the Western chronology counted from the birth of Christ with the Chinese dating system related to the Mandate of Heaven as exercised by individual emperors of the chosen dynasty. Szpot’s work covers the reign of the late Mings and the early period of the Qings. There is no doubt that the endeavours of the Jesuits at that time were subjected to dynamic evolution and modification, which resulted from a series of crises with which the missionaries had to struggle during their activities in China. The most important of them took place in the years 1606, 1616–1617, 1661–1671, 1706–1710, 1715–1724. Szpot emphasizes that the crises in China were usually caused by the tensions within court coteries, which had a ricocheting effect on Jesuit activities, but the crisis of 1606 was of a different kind as it was primarily brought about by the missionaries themselves. Individual envy and personal ambition dormant within the Catholic community of Macau burst into full flame of hatred and denunciation which seriously jeopardized the missionary work of the Jesuits stationed in the Middle Kingdom.
