Globalism as the New Totalism
Abstract
This article aims to distinguish between globalization as a natural phenomenon and globalism as an ideology. The phenomenon of globalization has objective causes, but its contemporary phase is based on certain values and interests. This has led to accusations that it is an ideological project that serves mainly the interests of its designers. To define the proper limits of globalization and negatively defined concept of globalism, the article begins with a vision of social relations based on the social doctrine of the Church. This vision is grounded in an organicmoral understanding of social relations rooted in natural law, the principle of subsidiarity, and the notion of a fundamental socio-philosophical principle that determines the social system. The principle of subsidiarity distinguishes the natural scope of globalization from its unjustified claims to intervene in issues that do not require international cooperation. Conversely, comparing the socio-philosophical principles proposed by Heinrich Pesch and further developed by Jan Piwowarczyk reveals that individualism and collectivism-totalism are deviations from the proper state of the social order. Thus, globalism that exceeds the bounds of the subsidiarity principle can be considered as a new form of totalism. In the name of a bright globalist future, it negates the autonomy and rights of individuals, families, and states.
