The Tempest and the Interplay of Spaces

Abstract

Shakespare’s ‘last play’ is famous for keeping the three (neo)classical unities of time, space and action. This paper’s main argument concerns transformations of the postulated one space in line with the diversified groups of characters who all have their own narratives concerning the island. Though Caliban, Ariel, Prospero, Miranda and the castaway sailors and aristocrats all meet on the same island, they all seem to experience vastly different territories, as different as their experience, motivations and aims. Above all of them hovers the vision of the magic of the theatrical space which brings the diversified worlds together with a sharp focus on society and politics.
