Halal Tourists in Zakopane from the Perspective of HoReCa Employees
Abstract
In the 2023 holiday season, Zakopane recorded a significant increase in the share of tourists from Arab countries in the HoReCa sector. The increased halal tourist traffic has caused consternation in the tourism industry, forcing it to reflect on the direction of further development of this sector. The article aims to show how HoReCa employees in the center of Zakopane (Krupówki) perceive contacts and cooperation with Muslim tourists. The aim is also to answer questions about the changes that the city’s tourist offer is subject to under the influence of halal tourism. The text is based on material obtained as a result of field research conducted in Zakopane and press analysis. The service sector in Podhale is flexible and quickly responds to changes in the tourist market, adapting the offer to the existing needs. Nevertheless, the clash with a different culture generated a number of misunderstandings and conflicts, which can be eliminated in the future by conducting education in this area. Małopolska and Podhale currently represent untapped potential in halal tourism, which has a chance for dynamic development.
