Abstract

This article examines the history of the pharmacy operated by the Jesuits in Krosno, linked to the local college, which not only served as an educational institution but also engaged in various economic activities, including managing a tavern and producing beer and vodka. Despite the dissolution of the college following the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the pharmacy survived and continued under the stewardship of Jan Łagoński, a former member of the order. This study draws upon manuscripts from the Jesuit Archives in Krakow (ATJKr), dated August 1774. Jan Łagoński, who had served as a Jesuit at the Krosno college prior to 1773, remained in Krosno after the order’s dissolution. In 1774, he acquired the pharmacy, started a family and established a tradition that carried on in subsequent years. The article opens with an overview of Jesuit-operated pharmacies, including a review of existing literature and a discussion of Jesuit pharmacists from Krosno. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the circumstances surrounding Jan Łagoński’s acquisition of the pharmacy and the beginnings of his family’s involvement in its management.
