Abstract

A Polish saint, head of the Catholic Church in the world, but previously a Krakow Cardinal, Karol Wojtyła visited New Zealand twice. First was in 1973 but, his second trip in 1986 is particularly remembered in Aotearoa. To this day, it is the only pilgrimage of Pope to this country in history. His two visits in a very visible way awakened the memory of the homeland, faith and culture of the ancestors in the descendants of Polish-speaking migrants, but also helped to sustain the local Catholic Church in a secularizing society for decades to come. His death did not go unnoticed in New Zealand, which remembers the visit of the pilgrim in white, who did not forget about the brothers in faith living so far from the Vatican. Now raised to the altars, the Polish saint is remembered in the Catholic Church in New Zealand, especially by his compatriots who permanently reside there.
