Literary Provenance of the Postcard of Opole Castle Garden from the Collection of Bogusław Szybkowski
Abstract
The postcard titled “Partie im Schlossgarten” (“Part of the Castle Garden”) from the collection of Bogusław Szybkowski, featuring a photograph of the Opole Castle Garden, serves as valuable research material for the literary-theoretical analysis in this article. As a rare and unique artifact—preserved in only one copy—it provides a significant glimpse into the history of Opole. Additionally, it showcases a now somewhat forgotten aspect of garden art, in which the Opole region rivaled the gardens of major European cities. This paper analyzes the garden motifs, or topoi, viewed through an interdisciplinary lens that combines artistic and historical perspectives on this type of archival material. In doing so, the article opens up avenues for research into the history of Opole Silesia and the region’s literary culture of past eras.
