“In Brotherly Friendship”
The Actions of French Diplomats in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Early Years of the Reign of John III
Abstract
The aim of the article is to show the double mission of the extraordinary ambassadors of France in Poland. The first of them, the bishop of Marseilles Toussaint de Forbin Janson, supported the candidacy of Jan Sobieski for the throne, which gained him the favor of the elect. Shortly afterwards, François Marquis de Béthune, Marie Casimire’s brother-in-law, arrived in the Commonwealth and from then on, the envoys were to work together for the cooperation of the new ruler with Louis XIV. However, it turned out that both also had their own private benefits in mind, which caused tensions between them. Problems with fulfilling the mission increased the frustration of the diplomats. The article is based on the analysis of diplomatic dispatches written jointly or by each of the envoys separately addressed to the French king or his minister. It seems that the achievements of the bishop of Marseilles at the beginning of his stay in the Commonwealth and the affinity of the marquis with the royal couple should have influenced the attitude of Jan III and his favor towards the diplomats. Meanwhile, as time passed, it turned out that the Polish king wanted to benefit from the rapprochement with France, but was not ready to fulfill its expectations against his own interests. This meant that the ambassadors encountered serious difficulties in persuading the monarch to take the announced actions. The diplomats did not manage to accomplish the mission entrusted to them. Their correspondence also shows that, while looking after their own profits – which they did not hide – they were not always willing to follow the instructions of the French court.
