Abstract

Mathematical education at the pre-primary stage sets out its aims which are predominantly focussed on the area of developing the cognitive side of the child’s personality. This area becomes the focus of relevant curricular documents for mathematical education, on the one hand, and influences the actual teaching of mathematics in practice, on the other. Meaningful and effective cross-curricular mathematical education opens a new space for developing the emotional and social skills of the child. The above aspect of mathematical education has the potential to become a determining factor in creating a positive attitude towards mathematics.

Iveta Scholtzová, University of Prešov in Prešov, Slovak Republic

Iveta Scholtzová is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Prešov. She teaches mathematical disciplines in the field of Preschool and Elementary Education, Bachelor’s degree programme of Preschool and Elementary Education and a Master’s degree programme of Teaching in the Primary Education. Her research interests include: the comparative study of primary mathematics in Slovakia and abroad, philosophical and curricular transformation of mathematical training of pre-elementary and elementary teachers, cognitive aspects of mathematical education, incorporation of combinatorics, probability and statistics related to primary education.

Edita Šimčíková, PhD is a specialist in the Department of Mathematical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Prešov. She teaches mathematical disciplines in the fields of Preschool and Elementary Education and Special Education; Bachelor’s degree programmes of Preschool and Elementary Education and Education of Mentally Handicapped and Master’s degree programme of Teaching in the Primary Education. Her research interests include: mathematical education in pre-primary stage, incorporation of alternative pedagogical approaches to teaching process in the 1st stage of primary schools, monitoring of the needs of a newly inducted teacher as a determinant of undergraduate mathematical training of elementary teachers, cognitive aspects of mathematical education, comparison of primary mathematics in Slovakia and abroad.
