An Attempt to Identify Development Patterns in Polish Regions
Abstract
Europe is a space consisting of centers and peripheries. The center is made up of France, Germany and Italy. In contrast, the Central European member states of the European Union form a specific peripheral area. The CEE countries are less prosperous compared to the European Union average and have focused on domestic development for more than 30 years. Particularly noteworthy in this aspect is the development of the Polish economy, in which economic growth is accompanied by an increase in regional and sub-regional disparities, especially between the western and eastern regions of the country. Poland has seen widening inequalities, especially between metropolitan areas and other regions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify the research hypothesis assuming that Polish regions develop according to characteristic development patterns. This is important for explaining the reasons for the continued peripheral nature of the study areas. Empirical research was carried out using statistical methods for data on the turnover of companies in selected industries in 2007-2019 and for the structure of gross value added per capita in 2007–2019. The study used methods such as critical analysis of the literature and analysis of published empirical secondary data. The work is based on the theory of evolutionary economics, which assumes an individualistic approach to shaping the development of regions. The completed study showed that the structure of gross value added in half of the regions studied tended to change in an undirected manner. In addition, the vast majority of company turnover divisions in the 3 surveyed classes of regions (11 regions in total) had a linear relationship of positive direction with the variable gross value added per capita.
