Mercator versus the Surrealists

On the Critical Potential of Cartographic Fiction

Keywords: surrealism, Mercator projection, world map, critical cartography, data visualisation

Abstract

The article contains an analysis of the anonymous drawing in the form of a world map, titled World at the Time of the Surrealists, that was published in 1929 in Variétés. A case study of this object, which is considered an early example of so-called “counter-cartography,” serves as a starting point for considering the critical potential of artistic variations on the standard formats of knowledge visualization (in this case, geographical knowledge expressed in the form of a map). The main part of the article consists of a comparison of the surrealist counter-map and the classical image of the world based on the Mercator projection it has been modelled after, with a discussion of the various formal means used by the author of the drawing. This juxtaposition reveals the inevitable entanglement of the (supposedly neutral) form of the standard world map with the ideological sphere, and à rebours reveals its weaknesses (scale distortions) and hidden assumptions (Eurocentrism, Occidentalism, arbitrariness of the choices made).
