Non-Memory of the Artist. Mechanism of Memory Keepers

A Case Study of the Sculptor Konstanty Laszczka

Keywords: artist, places of memory, oblivion, collective memory, cultural management

Abstract

The author addresses the issue of managing the artist›s memory from the perspective of the mechanisms of non-memory. Data gathered and generated during a year of ethnographic research enabled the reconstruction of specific memory practices surrounding the memory of Konstanty Laszczka. These, in turn, influenced the development of reflections that could become the basis for building a platform for cooperation between coexisting heritage stakeholders. The article focuses on family practices surrounding the heritage of a well-known and valued ancestor, which are characterized by oblivion, in order to identify spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and possible transformations. The mechanisms of non-memory include: memory entangled in gaps, dependent memory, mythicized memory, and monopolized memory. This study is part of an interdisciplinary master›s thesis, Strategies of Memory and Non-memory about Konstanty Laszczka. A tropographic case study of the memory management activities of the Krakow family unit and the Laszczka Social Museum in Dobre, defended with distinction at the Institute of Culture of the Jagiellonian University.
