Dialogue as a Way of Transformation

Sion’s Journey

Keywords: transformation, dialogue, Jews, relationships, Sion

Abstract

The historical relationship between Judaism and Christianity, symbolized by the Synagogue and Ecclesia, is characterized by frequent difficulties and tensions. This relationship underwent a profound transformation, particularly after the Holocaust and the publication of the Second Vatican Council document Nostra Aetate in 1965. A noteworthy case study of this transformation is the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion (also known as the Sisters of Sion). Founded in the mid-19th century by Theodore Ratisbonne with the initial goal of converting Jews, the congregation’s mission evolved significantly. Influenced by biblical scholarship, ecumenical movements, and the impact of the Shoah, the congregation shifted its focus from conversion to promoting a new understanding of the Jewish people’s enduring chooseness and the validity of Judaism across past, present, and future contexts. This article examines how the Congregation of the Sisters of Sion has undergone a radical reorientation in its self-perception, beliefs, traditions, and practices. It highlights the congregation’s efforts to reconcile its historical mission with contemporary perspectives on Jewish-Christian relations. By tracing the congregation’s historical evolution and current challenges, the article provides insights into the broader dynamics of Jewish-Christian dialogue and the ongoing tasks that emerge in this field.
