Aliens as Communists
The Political Interpretation of the Invasion of Extraterrestrials in American Films from the 1950s
Abstract
Movies about the invasion of space aliens on Earth were a phenomenon of American popular culture in the 1950s. Among them were such films as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, and The War of the Worlds. This popular science fiction sub-genre was heavily influenced by the atmosphere of Cold War political conflicts, and the film industry was also hit by the “second red scare” phenomenon. The historical context favors the political interpretations of these popular films. One of these interpretations sees the invasion of extraterrestrials as a metaphorical warning against the threat of communism. In this case, Aliens from outer space are only an embodiment of the fears plaguing the American society. The article aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the content of selected films to confirm the legitimacy of their anti-communist interpretation.
