One Journey, Three Accounts, or How Lionardo Frescobaldi, Giorgio Gucci And Simone Sigoli Described Their Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Keywords: Holy Land, pilgrimage, journey accounts, Middle Ages

Abstract

Medieval accounts of pilgrimages to the Holy Land are usually one-author works. They describe individual experiences and memories of pilgrims, which usually cannot be compared with the accounts of other participants in the same expedition. For this reason, an important and valuable source for the study of pilgrimage-making to the Holy Land are the accounts left by three pilgrims who made the journey to the East together in 1384–1385. The analysis of their accounts: Lionardo Frescobaldi’s, Simone Sigoli’s and Giorgio Gucci’s, allows us to point out a number of regularities that shed light on the circumstances of the writing and the way in which the authors of the exotic peregrinations selected the information provided.
