Comparative Analysis of the Attitudes of Czech and Poland Inhabitants towards COVID‑19 Pandemic
Abstract
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the rapid spread of the coronavirus epidemic. National governments have decided to apply various restrictive measures to delay the transmission of the virus. Those restrictions had an economic and psychological impact on society and started a debate regarding ethical norms and human rights violation. The study aimed to compare the reactions and attitudes towards the applied restrictions in the two neighboring countries – Poland and the Czech Republic, and to answer the question whether they differ in the context of the same restrictive measures. The method of an internet survey was used, in which the respondents assessed 28 restrictions in terms of their effectiveness, restrictiveness and compliance into them. 1731 people particiapted in the study, 723 from the Czech Republic and 1008 from Poland. The study was conducted between May 26 and August 31, 2020 – at the end of “the first wave” of the pandemic. There are a differences in perception of the restrictive measures used. Poles assessed their effectiveness and restrictiveness lower. Poles less frequently complied with the restrictions. This allows for a practical implication about the necessity of introduction measures of the highest efficiency and the least ailments, in conjunction with an earlier information campaign.
