New Patterns of Nonverbal Behavior in Mediated Communication

Keywords: nonverbal communication, mediated communication, immediacy of communication, time in culture, chronemics

Abstract

This article is devoted to chronemics – communication through time manage- ment, an integral part of non-verbal communication in the traditional sense. The revolution in communication technology has meant that a significant part of the communication process occurs indirectly, via technological devices. These changes also influence patterns of non-verbal behavior, including chrone- mics in online communication. The aim of the article is to present the results of pilot empirical research conducted on a group of young people aged 18–19. This provided an opportunity to highlight changes chronemic communication patterns and propose new competences in non-verbal communication through time management. The discussion is framed within a critical review of the litera- ture, highlighting key approaches to chronemics. These issues are considered in the context of socio-cultural trends in the perception and use of time.
