Review and Evaluation of Selected Interventions for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Poland
Abstract
In this review article the author discusses selected interventions used in therapy of children with autism spectrum disorder in Poland, such as: assistive and adaptive technology, augmentative and alternative communication, behavioral and developmental interventions, educational, biomedical, complementary and alternative medicine, special diets, and dietary supplements. Some of them have a proven positive impact, others do not provide such evidence or may even be harmful not only to the health but also to the lives of autistic children. In some countries, work is being undertaken to regulate the issue of therapy for people with autism spectrum disorder. In the United States and the United Kingdom, parliamentarians, autistic people, their parents/carers, non-governmental organizations, scientists and health and education professionals are working together to provide detailed information on how to plan, implement and monitor specific practices based on evidence, which researchers have reported to demonstrate that the practice produces positive outcomes for children, adolescents, and/or adults with ASD. The author of the text noted that legal regulations should be introduced in the country to monitor pedagogical, psychological and biomedical interventions. It will also help parents and professionals make the right choices in this regard.
