Prevention of Speech Development Disorders in Children with Periventricular Hemorrhage
Abstract
The aim of the article is to present and evaluate activities in the field of speech therapy prevention aimed at children with periventricular haemorrhages (PVH/IVH). This bleeding is one type of perinatal complications that increase the risk of developmental disorders, including speech development disorders. The assessment of preventive measures was based on the opinions of parents of 37 children with PVH/IVH and the interpretation of data from patient records. The research procedure used a diagnostic survey (with the speech therapy interview technique) and analysis of specialist documentation. Its role was to supplement, expand upon and verify the information obtained from respondents. The research aimed to answer the following questions: 1) What speech therapy prevention measures are taken for children with PVH/IVH? 2) Can these measures be considered sufficient? If not, what are the reasons for this state of affairs? The identification of preventive measures was part of a larger research project devoted to the analysis of speech development disorders in children with periventricular haemorrhages, the results of which were published in a separate publication. Since there are no reports in the Polish-language literature on the subject, the conducted research fills a gap in this area.
