- Auditory Perception and Prevention of Hearing Disorders in Children
Abstract
The aim of this article is to explain what auditory perception is and to emphasise its importance in the prevention of hearing disorders in pre-school and early school-age children. Based on a review of the scientific literature, the structure and functioning of the hearing organ were discussed and the concept of auditory perception – understood as a complex process involving the detection, analysis and interpretation of sound signals – was defined. The importance of speech perception in the process of hearing and the development of auditory functions in human ontogenesis was emphasised. The symptoms of peripheral and central hearing disorders were also characterised. The state of auditory perception is crucial for child development, including the development of language communication. As a result, it largely determines the course of the educational process and the functioning of the child as a student. The theoretical perspective outlined above highlights the role of hearing disorder prevention and provides recommendations in this area. The need to shape appropriate pro-health behaviours in pupils, educate teaching staff and implement preventive speech therapy measures (primary, secondary and tertiary prevention) was emphasised. The study has an educational dimension, but also a practical one, and is addressed to teachers, speech therapists and special educators.
